Pilot Funding for Collaborative & Translational Studies

Innovative translational research projects often necessitate pursuing non-traditional concepts and require novel approaches to funding. The barrier identified most frequently is the lack of adequate and timely availability of pilot funds. Therefore, to enhance translational research in Indiana, we have created:

  1. A translational research pilot project fund called “Consortium Pilot Funds” of about $2.65 million per year formed by a coalition of our new and existing pilot funds, and by collaborating with our partner institutions.
  2. The Resource Allocation and Funding Team (RAFT), a CTSI governing body that will set research areas of emphasis for the CTSI; and design and approve all the “Requests for Applications” (RFAs) released by the CTSI.
  3. The Mapping and Oversight Program (MOP), which will keep close track of pilot projects approved for CTSI funding, release funds based on their meeting appropriate milestones set by its “mapping” at the outset or, if the milestones are not met, provide a forum for problem-solve through barriers encountered for each sponsored project.

This approach is both transformative and fiscally responsible: transformative because it will stimulate innovative pilot studies, support young investigators, and invest in novel technologies and translational methods development; and fiscally responsible because the funding process will not only be rapid and merit-based but also is a sound investment, driven by metrics and milestones.
