 My Lungs have a pH?

My Lungs have a pH?

M
Mike Davis
18-60 years
All genders
Phase 1
Observational
pH is a measurement of acidity. Lung pH, or airway pH, is the measurement of acidity in the lungs and airway specifically. Airway pH varies from person to person, depending on their health. Because of this, IU School of Medicine is collecting an airway pH spectrum from a variety of people with and without lung disease.             We are currently looking for individuals with a chronic lung disease to inhale a study drug that will increase their airway pH.

What is this study about? We are investigating the effects of brief bouts of physical activity and bodily pain in adults with obstructive sleep apnea.Who can participate?Adults (ages 18-65) diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

You have probably heard about the pH levels of soils – if it is acidic or basic. Did you know that the human airway also has a measurement of its acidity and basicity, called airway pH? Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine are researching how to identify the airway pH of people with asthma and cystic fibrosis, and then to see if a breathed-in drug treatment will have an impact on the pH of their airway.  In this study, researchers will:   ·         Look at your specific airway’s environment and evaluate the severity of your asthma ·         Collect some airway samples and measurements to compare to other levels of asthma ·         Measure if the pH of your airway responds to the breathed-in drug treatment

Phase 2
IU School of Medicine is researching how dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) treatments, a supplement for a hormone that your body naturally produces, affect people with asthma. Though DHEA is currently an over-the-counter medication, researchers want to pinpoint its slow-release capability to help patients with asthma.

Why is this study being done? The purpose of this study is to image the brain using MRI. The brain naturally changes with age, but the causes behind these changes are largely unknown. We are developing new imaging technology to early detect small changes in the brain. The goal of our study is to increase our understanding of how the brain – specifically, its CSF flow dynamic – naturally changes with age. If proven successful, the new imaging tool can help early diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Who can take part in this study?Healthy adults, ages 35 and older older, who do not have a history of neurodegenerative disorder, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or previous brain surgery.

Why is this study being done?Researchers at the IU School of Public Health want to better understand the health of Black and African women. The goal of this study is to explore the health behaviors, experiences, and conditions of these women which will help guide interventions to reduce the disparities in reproductive health among these populations of women.Who can take part in this study?Women, ages 18-45, who self-identify as black or African American.

The Biobanking in Indiana Public Deliberation Project

The Biobanking in Indiana Public Deliberation Project

Did you know that each week, around 100 of your fellow Hoosiers give a vial of blood to help medical researchers? This blood is kept by the Indiana Biobank, a project that is designed to help provide researchers across the state - and even across the nation - with biological samples that they can then use to develop new medicines, better understand diseases, and improve patient care. To date, more than 50,000 people have provided blood samples, and the goal is to collect many more over the coming years.Biobanks need the public’s input on some important issues ranging from figuring how much information biobanks should be gathering about donors to what types of research biobanks should support. We are inviting people from across the state to participate in a project called “The Biobanking in Indiana Public Deliberation.” It is a research study at the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), a research collaborative between Indiana University, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame.  The project will take place over two weekends during which time participants will learn about the issues, share their perspectives on them, and work together to make recommendations for biobank policy and guidelines. We are not expecting you to have any specialized knowledge about biobanks or research. Instead, you will learn everything you need to know to contribute with the other participants. Your perspectives and life experiences matter – not your expertise!
